The Henry Art Gallery, a vital cultural resource on the University of Washington campus, stands out with its cutting-edge approach to exhibitions. The Henry engages visitors in powerful art experiences and serves as a catalyst for the creation of new work in the visual arts. Founded in 1927, the museum’s exhibitions bring important works of art by internationally-recognized as well as by local and Northwest artists. The Henry is committed to exhibiting contemporary works, and to framing historical works in a
contemporary context.
In 2003, the Henry opened a permanent Skyspace by artist James Turrell. The Skyspace employs light, space, and atmosphere to create a unique visual experience. The Skyspace is not only a spectacular part of the museum’s permanent collection, it is now an important part of the Henry’s architecture, and a radiant addition to the University District’s skyline.
