Sprawling over 230 acres, Washington Park Arboretum is a relaxing urban park, a botanical research center, and a living plant museum. In 1934 the city agreed to set aside land for the University of Washington to establish a botanical garden and park. Many of the park’s elements, such as a stone cottage and Azalea Way, were built as part of the Works Progress Administration program before World War II.
More than 40,000 native and exotic trees from 4,800 different species flourish along paths and in thematic and culturally planned garden areas. Beginning as early as February, cherry and plum trees burst forth in a flurry of pale pink blooms. The spectacular display continues through late autumn when deciduous trees change color into fiery shades of crimson and auburn.
